#SaveLabs

#SaveLabs
"This was not just about helping labs survive the coronavirus crisis and re-open their doors again safely. Now, it just as much about encouraging a new, but essential mindset throughout the industry"

You will likely have seen the Save Labs, Buy British campaign launched by the Dental Laboratories Association (DLA) in May 2020. The aim has been to keep DLA members informed and supported, while drawing attention to the needs of dental labs across the UK as the pandemic continues to ravage businesses of all shapes and sizes. It has also sent a message direct to dental practices, requesting that they fulfil their unpaid lab bills and show their support for their colleagues in UK laboratories.

Many businesses have had a difficult time this year and dental laboratories are no exception. Much of the work being done by the DLA right now is all about providing the guidance and support that labs need to get them through the rough patch and into brighter days. However, the long-term impact of the coronavirus on businesses in the sector could yet be a big one. Looking into the proverbial crystal ball, this is what I would predict for the future of our great profession…

The #SaveLabs campaign has gained momentum and many individuals and teams have helped to spread its important messages in all corners of the profession. However, this was not just about helping labs survive the coronavirus crisis and re-open their doors again safely. Now, it just as much about encouraging a new, but essential mindset throughout the industry. Importing goods and outsourcing services overseas is becoming a less viable option for many practices in the UK. This is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future, so it presents the prefect opportunity to retain business within the UK and to support each other right here at home. As stated in a letter written by DLA President, Steve Campbell, sent out to every practice on the DLA database, there are two major advantages for those who work with UK-based labs:

  • UK dental labs are among the most regulated in the world. Between quality education for dental technicians, meticulous protocols and cutting-edge technologies in labs, they offer a gold standard service, as well as peace of mind regarding the safety of products delivered.
  • Re-investing money and resources within the UK profession is crucial for the long-term stability and success of all involved.

If dogs are not just for Christmas, then the Save Labs, Buy British campaign is not just for coronavirus. It’s essential that dental practices support UK dental technology while they still can, returning the investment that dental labs make into the quality services they provide practices and patients every day. It is this synergy that makes the profession tick and enables thousands of patients to receive the first-class dental care and appliances they need each year.

At the end of the day, buying British isn’t just a nice thing to do, it’s the right thing to do. As the DLA continues to get that message out to dental practices across the UK, the Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) will be supporting the cause in every way possible.
