The General Dental Council (GDC) has released a revised Scope of Practice guidance, effective 1 November 2025, following an extensive review involving dental professionals, education providers, indemnifiers and stakeholders. The review does not change the legal scope of any of the seven registrant groups—including dental technicians—but instead clarifies existing title boundaries, modernises the structure of the guidance, and provides a more holistic, flexible framework for understanding professional responsibilities.
- 1. Explain the purpose and structure of the GDC’s revised Scope of Practice guidance, including key changes introduced in the 2025 update.
- 2. Identify how the revised guidance affects the role and responsibilities of dental technicians, particularly regarding competence, training, and professional judgement.
- 3. Apply the updated principles—including understanding of boundaries, team-based practice, and safe practitioner behaviours—to everyday technical and clinical communication workflows.
- 4. Evaluate how the updated guidance supports improved patient safety and professional accountability within the dental technology profession.
- 5. Recognise when additional training, referral, supervision or indemnity considerations are required under the revised framework.
