Learning Content

This presentation explores the transition from dental technology education into the early stages of building a modern dental laboratory through a university-supported incubator programme. Using the development of Ameri Dental Lab as a live case study, the session examines the limitations of traditional laboratory models and considers how new approaches to workflow, collaboration, and sustainability may better support the future of the profession. Attendees will gain insight into emerging pathways for dental technologists and the evolving role of dental laboratories within modern dentistry.

  • Identify key limitations within traditional dental laboratory models -
  • Understand the concept of incubator labs and their role in supporting emerging dental technologists -
  • Explore how digital-first workflows and early design decisions influence laboratory sustainability -
  • Consider how collaboration between technicians, clinicians, and educational institutions may evolve.

Aims

Dental laboratories are facing increasing pressure from digital transformation, workforce challenges, and changing expectations from clinicians. This session offers a perspective from the point of transition between education and industry, examining how dental labs can be rethought when designed from the ground up. The presentation introduces the incubator lab model and discusses how it can reduce barriers for emerging technologists while encouraging innovation, long-term thinking, and stronger clinician–technician relationships. Ameri Dental Lab is presented as a developing framework to explore these ideas in practice.
