3D-virtual surgical planning in orthognathic surgery: improving clinical efficiency and treatment outcome
Learning Content
Advances in clinical imaging, computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacture have given rise to the application of three-dimensional virtual surgical planning (3D-VSP) in the management of orthognathic cases. 3D-VSP provides clinicians and technologists with a virtual representation of the facial skeleton, soft tissues, and dentition, that are valuable in treatment planning, patient communication, and evaluating surgical outcomes.
This presentation reviews the transition from conventional techniques to contemporary digital planning workflows.
Through clinical case examples and supporting research, the session evaluates how 3D technology influences clinical efficiency and treatment outcome, while also addressing it's limitations.
- - Understand the key factors contributing to successful orthognathic treatment outcomes
- - Understand the differences between conventional orthognathic planning when compared with 3D virtual surgical planning.
- - Recognise the role of the technologist in the digital planning workflow.
- - Identify the clinical benefits and limitations of 3D virtual surgical planning
- - Appreciate the application of 3D virtual surgical planning through clinical cases and current research.
